According to Jumptap’s MobileSTAT (Simple Targeting & Audience Trends) report for February, Android and iOS account for 91 percent of the smartphone OS market. The report also found that a third of tablet traffic in December came from the Kindle Fire.
Google’s Android finished January with 58.8 percent of the smartphone OS market, according to Jumptap. Apple’s iOS finished the month with 32.2 percent of the market. Android and iOS reached new highs in January.
Meanwhile, BlackBerry OS finished January with 6.7 percent of the market, followed by Symbian with 1.4 percent and Windows Phone/Mobile OS with 0.5 percent.
“The spike in Android and iOS share follows a Christmas holiday where we saw a massive number of activations of these devices,” Jumptap noted in its report.
According to the report, the Kindle Fire finished January with 33 percent of tablet traffic, up from 20 percent in December. Meanwhile, Apple iPad finished January with 48 percent of the market, down from 52 percent in January. Jumptap noted that tablets still account for only 10 percent of its total network traffic.
However, the debut of iPad 3 this month will certainly shift the tides back in favor of the iPad’s market share.
Jumptap also looked at the mobile devices of choice in Las Vegas at CES in January: “Our analysis showed that Vegas had a 100% increase in iPad use and 111% increase in Blackberry use during CES. Looks like these were two of the devices of choice for techie attendees. CES attendees were also less likely to be packing feature phones than the Vegas locals.”
According to separate numbers from Nielsen, 16 million mobile users in the U.S. owned an iPad or iPad 2 in January.
Nielsen also notes that 14.3 percent of mobile owners in the U.S. also own a tablet. This figure stands at 10.3 percent in Canada, 10.3 percent in Spain, 8.4 percent in France, 8.2 percent in the U.K., 8.2 percent in Italy, 7.4 percent in Germany and 4.6 percent in Japan.
Meanwhile, 64.2 million smartphone owners in the U.S. accessed social networking or blog destinations via their mobile device ever in the month in December, up 77 percent year-over-year; 38.2 million said they access these destinations almost every day, up 88 percent year-over-year.
