J. C. Penney Co. Inc. reported catalog sales of $178 million for the four weeks ended May 25, a 19.1% decrease from $220 million for the same period last year.
Comparable department store sales were $946 million, a 5.1% drop from $1 billion for the same period in 2001.
The Plano, TX-based firm attributed its catalog sales performance to weaker sales in seasonal merchandise areas and fewer promotions than last year.
