Internet Explorer Continues its Descent

According to recent figures from Net Applications, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer continued its habit of losing market share, finishing January 2009 with a still-strong 67.55 percent. Meanwhile, Mozilla’s Firefox, Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome all continued their uphill climb.

  • Firefox finished January with 21.53 percent of the market, up from its 21.34 percent market share in December 2008.
  • Safari held 8.29 percent of the market in January, an increase from its 7.93 percent share in December.
  • Chrome stayed above the 1-percent mark, finishing January with 1.12 percent, up from its 1.04 percent market share in December.
  • Meanwhile, Opera remained relatively flat, finishing January with 0.70 percent of the market, a slight dip from its 0.71 percent share in December and November.
  • Netscape’s share remained flat at 0.57 percent.
  • Internet Explorer has lost market share in six consecutive months.
