Google More Popular in Europe than in U.S.

The latest report from comScore indicates that Google was visited by 75% of the European online population in July. Interestingly enough, this exceeds the 60% of the American online population that visited Google’s properties in the same month.

Google’s online properties garnered 156.3 million unique visitors during July, while Microsoft’s sites attracted 144.1 million unique visitors. Yahoo!’s sites drew 99.5 million unique visitors during that same month.

EBay was fourth with 86.2 million visitors, followed by Time Warner Network with 59.5 million, Wikipedia sites with 46.5 million, Amazon online properties with 40.1 million, Adobe sites with 31.6 million, Ask Network with 30.1 million, and Vodafone Group with 29.7 million unique visitors.

Google and Microsoft battled it out for the top spot in each of the major European countries, oftentimes finishing first and second, with a few exceptions.

Of the 15 European countries included in the report, Google was number one in nine of them, while Microsoft took the top spot in the remaining six of those nations.

Local companies “with a major national online presence” such as Belgacom Group, France Telecom, and Swisscom squeezed their way into the third spots in many of these countries, according to the report.

Google’s supremacy in Europe seems to be locked in for the foreseeable future since it has deals inked with the likes of eBay and Time Warner’s AOL, which rank fourth and fifth respectively on comScore’s European list.
