Google Launches Automated News Service

Internet search engine Google launched a new site on Monday for searching news from 4,000 English-language sources.

Featuring an international cacophony of newspapers and news sources, the service uses algorithms–rather than human editors–to determine what news is worthy of publication.

The news is chosen based on how often and on what sites a story appears elsewhere on the Web, according to a statement from the Palo Alto, CA company. The algorithms rely on those news services to determine which sites offer the most valuable and relevant information. Date and time stories were posted is published along with the articles.

Users who enter search terms on the main site will also see when that term is mentioned in the news.

The site is accepting no advertising and is offering the service for free at present.

Google News is accessible through a tab on the home page (www.google.com).
