Google Claims Another Big #1 Spot

Good news just isn’t in the cards for Yahoo! these days.

Yahoo! has long been the top Web property on comScore’s monthly lists, but the landscape changed in April. For the first time ever, Google claimed the top spot on comScore’s list of the top 50 Internet properties, relegating Yahoo! to the second spot.

Google Sites drew 141.1 million unique visitors in the U.S. during April, while Yahoo! Sites drew 140.6 million visitors during the same month. Microsoft Sites was third with 121.2 million visitors in April, while AOL LLC was fourth with 111.3 million unique visitors.

Fox Interactive Media (87.5 million), eBay (80.9 million), Wikipedia Sites (58.8 million), Amazon Sites (58.1 million), Ask Network (54.1 million), and Time Warner – Excluding AOL (52.5 million) rounded out the top 10.

Google’s run to the top was spurred on by growth in its search market share, as well as big increases in YouTube’s traffic.

There were a total of 190.7 million unique Web users in the U.S. in April, compared to 188.0 million in March.

PlayList.com was the top gaining property in April, seeing its unique audience grow 38% from March to April. MLB.com saw its audience grow 36%, while IRS.gov saw its audience grow 35%, thanks to the tax filing deadline.

TheStret.com Sites, Chrysler LLC, CondeNast Publications – CondeNet Network, and Lowes.com all saw growth of at least 20% in its total unique audience.

Pharmacy was the top gaining category in April, with its audience growing 8% from March to April. Retail – Food also grew 8%. Job Search sites drew 5% more visitors in April, mainly due to the pending graduation of many college students. Entertainment – TV sites drew an audience that was 4% bigger in April compared to March. This was due to many shows returning to air once the writer’s strike was settled.

Platform-A topped the comScore Ad Focus Ranking, reaching 170.5 million unique visitors in April, giving the ad network a reach of 89%.

Advertising.com followed behind, reaching 167.7 million visitors (88%). Yahoo! Network fell in third, reaching 160.2 million visitors (84%), while Google Ad Network was fourth, reaching 155.9 million (82%) in April.
