The Food and Drug Administration has proposed sending back most drug products mailed by overseas pharmacies to people in the U.S. to keep illegal, counterfeit or contaminated medicines from American consumers, according to news reports.
The number of packages containing drugs from overseas has soared in recent years, primarily because of Internet sales, and has overwhelmed authorities’ ability to inspect them, agency officials told Congress.
The Food and Drug Administration estimated that 2 million packages containing drugs enter the United States through international mail each year.
