Europe Becomes Large Online Holiday Market

Europe will become the No. 1 region for worldwide online sales in the fourth quarter,

Worldwide online holiday sales in 2002 are projected to total $38.2 billion, up 48.4% from $25.8 billion last year, according to GartnerG2.

Europeans will spend nearly $15.8 billion this holiday season, up 41.3% from 2001. Second is North America with nearly $15.7 billion, a 41% increase over last year’s $11.86 billion.

“Gains in Europe are being fueled by companies integrating their mail order and Web presence,” said GartnerG2 analyst Gill Mannered, in a statement. “Europeans are using multiple channels, browsing printed catalogs and then ordering online. We’re seeing this happen more, especially in the clothing and toy merchandise industries.”

Online sales in the Asia/Pacific region will total $3.32 billion, up 8.7% from $2.46 billion in 2001and the rest of the world will spend $21.52 billion online, up 4% from last year’s $999 million.
