The J. Jill Group generated $2.2 million in net income on sales of nearly $100 million during the first quarter of 2004, compared to net income of $768,000 and sales of $82.4 million in first quarter 2003. But while retail sales rose between the quarters, direct sales fell.
Internet sales remained strong, growing from $17.3 million to $19.1 million. But a drop in catalog sales more than offset that, as the slipped from $32.8 million to $29.6 million. In contrast, retail sales jumped from $31.4 million to $48.8 million, and ancillary income rose from $921,000 to $951,000.
We attribute our current success to a series of factors, including our emphasis on color, our multi-channel marketing campaigns, the rollout of our cross-channel customer database, our new visual in-store presentation, some relatively minor adjustments to our merchandise silhouettes and fit along with an improving overall economic environment,” Gordon R. Cooke, the company’s president and CEO said in a statement.
