Decision on FTC Do-Not-Call List Expected this Week

The Federal Trade Commission is expected to announce this week whether it will move forward with its proposal to create a national do-not-call list.

Some industry experts believe the FTC will create the registry and make other revisions to its Telemarketing Sales Rule as well. The proposal for a national list modifies the TSR, which protects consumers from unwanted telemarketing calls and prohibits deceptive sales calls.

The FTC has said that the registry would allow consumers to all but eliminate most unwanted telemarketing calls.

The Direct Marketing Association has expressed concern over the creation of a national list. It has said that such a list would be unnecessary since the DMA already maintains the Telephone Preference Service, a national do-not-call list of 4.1 million Americans.

The FTC accepted comments on the proposal through June 2002.
