Coca-Cola has pulled its Dasani bottled water off grocery store shelves in the U.K. and has postponed the launch of the water in Europe in the wake of contamination concerns.
The water was found to contain illegal levels of bromate, a cancer-causing chemical, news reports said.
Coca-Cola said the problem arose during the ozonisation process during manufacturing, which adds calcium to the product, and recalled about 500,000 bottles from British stores.
The company said that after it had identified the issue, it consulted with the Food Standards Agency and began the withdrawal as a “precautionary measure.” The FSA confirmed that there was no immediate health or safety issue, Coca-Cola said.
The withdrawal began last Friday and was expected to be 80% to 85% completed within 24 hours, the company said.
Launches for the water, which debuted in February, had been set for France in April and Germany in May.
