J.C. Penney Co. Inc. generated $7.31 billion in sales during its second quarter, up 1.6% from $7.2 billion a year ago. Its total operating profit rose from $95 million to $105 million, while it trimmed its net loss from $6 million to a break-even level. The quarter ended July 26.
While J.C. Penney did not break out its catalog results from its retail sales, during the last quarter total sales rose slightly from $3.62 billion to $3.66 billion. Operating profit for the segment more than doubled, from $22 million to $51 million.
Eckerd Drugstores saw its revenue rise from $3.58 billion to $3.66 billion, but its operating profit slipped from $73 million to $54 million.
The Plano, TX-based company is looking for a turnaround in the third quarter with the advent of the back-to-school selling season, Allen Questrom, J.C. Penney
