Cancer Agency Raises Dough with Virtual Bakery

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

New York-based non-profit CancerCare has launched a fund-raising promotion that lets Web visitors send virtual cupcakes to friends and in the process earn money to fight pediatric cancer.

The promotion, “Cupcakes for a Cause”, is part Cancer Care’s annual CancerCare for Kids fundraising effort. Supporters can go to http://www.cupcakesforacause.com, through Oct. 21 to design an “e-cupcake” by customizing the flavor, frosting, and toppings, and then e-mail that cupcake to up to four friends. CancerCare will earn $1 from pre-arranged supporters for every e-cupcake sent, up to a total of $10,000.

E-cupcake mailers can attach their name and location to their creations, which can then be searched by name or city in a portfolio of virtual baked goods on the site.

The Web site also tells visitors about the 140 bakeries nationwide participating in the Cupcakes for a Cause program by donating proceeds from their own cupcake sales this week to the organization. A store locator feature helps supporters find participating bakeries in their town.

Information on the site explains how visitors’ contributions help support the free counseling and services available through the CancerCare for Kids program.

Merkle has been working with CancerCare for about a year, assisting with fund-raising efforts through its Merkle/Domain direct-response division.
