Internet service provider AOL is closing a call center in Jacksonville, FL and trimming staff at four other locations, according to news reports.
Around 1,300 employees are expected to lose their jobs. Last October, AOL eliminated 700 call center jobs and closed a facility in Orlando.
A company spokesman attributed the reduction in call volume that led to the cuts to more customers going online to resolve problems.
The Jacksonville call center employed 780 employees. The company is also cutting 300 jobs in Tucson, 125 in Ogden and a handful each in Albuquerque, NM and Dulles, VA, according to the AP. The Jacksonville and Ogden terminations occurred on Tuesday, and the Tucson reductions are effective June 30, the AP reported.
