AOL Supports Microsoft’s New Sender ID

Microsoft Corp. has modified Sender ID e-mail authentication technology under development and won back the support of America Online Inc., which had withdrawn its support in mid September. AOL now plans to begin testing Sender ID before the end of this year.

E-mail authentication technology is being developed for the purpose of reducing transmissions of spam e-mail. The latest version of Sender ID developed by Microsoft is compatible with tens of thousands of Web site domains already using a simpler e-mail authentication protocol, which had been a major concern for AOL.

The modified technology will be reviewed further by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), a group of companies working with Microsoft to develop industry standards for identifying and authenticating the sources of e-mail.

“Today a new version of Sender ID is being submitted to the IETF that we believe fully addresses and answers AOL’s concerns and those of many others who shared those concerns,” said a statement released by AOL.
