Speigel Closes Call Center, 670 Lose Jobs

The Spiegel Group will close its Wichita call center, eliminating 670 jobs.

Spiegel, based in Downers Grove, Ill., cited a decline in volume thanks to customers diverting orders to the Internet and more efficient call center technologies becoming available as reasons for shutting the site, according to news reports.

The facility will close May 17. It opened in 1994 and is one of five call centers in North America that services the Spiegel Group, which includes Spiegel, Newport News and Eddie Bauer catalogs.

Spiegel will maintain its call centers in Hampton, VA; Bothell, WA; Rapid City, SD; and St. John, New Brunswick in Canada.
