OfficeMax Sales Drop as Loss Increases

OfficeMax Inc. had sales of $4.64 billion during fiscal 2001, compared to $5.13 billion a year earlier. The company’s net loss more than doubled, from $133.2 million to $295.8 million.

The Cleveland-based business supplies firm had $1.27 billion in fourth quarter 2001, compared with $1.41 billion in fourth quarter 2000. Its net loss nearly tripled from just under $85 million to $229.5 million, partly attributable to the costs of closing 29 retail stores.

Both fourth-quarter and fiscal 2000 contained one week more than fourth quarter and fiscal 2001. The quarter and the year ended Jan. 26.
