Nordstrom Cuts Loss on Direct Sales, Has Income Gain for Year

Nordstrom Inc. had net earnings of $50.7 million during fourth-quarter 2001, up from $27 million in fourth-quarter 2000. Sales during the quarter slipped from $1.66 billion to $1.63 billion.

For all of 2001, the company had net earnings of $124.7 million, up from $101.9 million. Sales rose from $5.53 billion a year ago to $5.63 billion. The quarter and the year ended Jan. 31.

Within its Nordstrom.com subsidiary, which includes both catalog and Internet sales, fourth-quarter revenue fell from $87.5 million a year ago to $78.3 million. But the subsidiary had net income of $200,000, compared with a net loss of $4.7 million.

For the year, Nordstrom.com had sales of $277.3 million, down from $310.6 million, and a net loss of $8.1 million, an improvement over the $29.4 million loss seen during 2000.
