MySpace, Mark Burnett Offer $1 Million to Political Contestants

Social networking site MySpace.com is teaming up with TV producer Mark Burnett to launch a new reality show in search of an independent political candidate.

The show, called “Independent,” will feature people interested in running for political office. It will debut in early 2008 on a TV network yet to be announced. Clips from the program will also run online.

The effort marks the first time MySpace.com has partnered with a TV producer for a reality show.

Candidates can audition by submitting a video to MySpace.com. Contestants, who will be narrowed down through online voting, can set up a profile that will serve as their campaign platform. Visitors can offer feedback on the site, interact with politicians and advise them on what hot-topic issues or tasks they should tackle on the show.

One winner will receive $1 million to either donate to a political cause or to use to help fund his or her political campaign.

“MySpace puts political power back in the hands of everyday people and ‘Independent’ takes it to a whole new level,” said Tom Anderson, president and co-founder of MySpace.

MySpace.com is no stranger to the world of politics. The company this year launched a dedicated channel on its site, called Impacts. It offers profiles on candidates running for national office, voter registration information and tips on how to get involved with political organizations.

Burnett is the producer of the hit TV shows “Survivor” and “The Apprentice.”
