Gateway, Inc. took a first quarter net loss of $123 million, an improvement from the net loss of $502.9 million it recorded in first quarter 2001. But the computer hardware and software dealer saw its revenue shrink from $2.03 billion in first quarter 2001 to $992.2 million during the same period. The quarter ended March 31.
During first quarter 2002, Gateway sold 645,000 units, 30% less than it sold in first quarter 2001. The average cost per unit dropped as well, from $1,851 in first quarter 2001 to $1,538. The Poway, CA-based computer and peripherals marketer is actively pursuing a “value pricing strategy,” according to a statement.
