Two firms that sold dubious opportunities to earn money have been all but shut down as a result of complaints filed last February by the Federal Trade Commission.
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida issued default judgments and orders of permanent injunction last week against Money Movers Inc., Gold Leaf Distribution Co. and their principals.
According to the FTC, Money Movers, of Vero Beach, FL, sold automated, coin change machine distributorships through franchise Web sites and telephone. Consumers who called a toll-free number for information were told that they could generate revenue of roughly $29,000 per year, the FTC continued.
Gold Lead Distribution, of Miami, sold cigar distributorships. They claimed that they would help purchasers find locations for cigar humidors.
The individuals named in the judgments included Erastus Corning Davis, Luz Amporo Ugarte and Jose V. Ugarte.
The actions in February were part of Project Biz Opp Flop, a massive crackdown on more than 200 work-at-home by the FTC, the Department of Justice, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and law enforcement agencies from 14 states. Some of those defendants were also hit with criminal charges.
