Dell Computer Corp., Austin, TX, is cutting 1700 jobs to reduce costs and address slower sales growth. The cuts are the first since the computer direct marketing company was founded 17 years ago by Michael Dell in his college dorm room.
The cuts represent about 4% of Dell’s workforce and most will be made at the company’s Round Rock campus, near Austin. Some workers will also be dismissed from the San Jose, CA office, but international operations and a new factory in Nashville, TN, will not be affected.
The company employs more than 40,000 people worldwide, of which about 22,000 work in and around Austin.
