Cost Increases Lead to NBTY Income Dip

NBTY Inc. posted net income of $46 million for the third quarter, a decrease from $51 million in the prior year.

The nutritional supplements direct marketer reported net sales of $535 million for the quarter ended June 30, a 6% increase over $503 million last year.

The company posted net sales from direct response/e-commerce operations of $55 million for the quarter, a 17% increase over $47 million last year.

The firm reported net sales of $284 million for its wholesale/US nutrition division, a 14% increase over $248 million in the prior year. The unit markets Nature’s Bounty, Solgar, Osteo Bi-Flex, Rexall, Ester-C and other brands.

The Ronkonkoma, NY firm posted an overall gross profit of 51% for the quarter, a decrease from 52% last year.

Management attributed these results to increases in advertising costs and selling, general and administrative expenses.
