CMA Calls for Canadian Postal Settlement

The Canadian Marketing Association called on Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers on Friday to reach a settlement and avoid a national strike.

The association takes no position on the issues between the parties. However, CMA feels both parties have an obligation to the Canadian public and to the business community to settle their differences without a labor disruption.

Each year, Canadians buy more than $16 billion in goods and services through the mail, generating employment for over 185,000 Canadians, the group said.

Last month, the 45,000 members of CUPW gave their union a 92 per cent strike mandate. Their contract expired Jan. 31. The strike deadline is set for 12:01 a.m. next Friday.

According to news reports, the union and the Canada Post while still hopeful of reaching a deal, were at an impasse over such issues as salaries, outsourcing, retirement, workload and safety.
