Amazon.com reported net sales of $851 million in third quarter 2002, compared with $639 million in third quarter 2001. The company reduced its net loss to $35. 1 million, down from $169.9 million a year ago. The quarter ended Sept. 30.
A significant chunk of the decline in net loss can be attributed to goodwill amortization: In third quarter 2001 Amazon took a $41.8 million goodwill charge, compared with a $1.2 million expense in the quarter just ended.
The Seattle-based online retailer also trimmed its marketing spending, cutting marketing expenses from $32.5 million to $26.7 million.
