Universal Promotes Old and New Films in $30 Million Push

Universal Studios has partnered with Carl’s Jr., the American Red Cross and Toys “R” Us in an estimated $30 million marketing blitz to promote its upcoming and classic films.

Carl’s Jr. will feature the new movie Van Helsing in TV and radio spots that began airing this week. The QSR is also selling Van Helsing collector mint tins and offering customers four 44-ounce themed collector cups free with the purchase of any large drink or large combo meal.

Carl’s Jr. and Universal Pictures will also co-sponsor four Southern California blood drives with the American Red Cross. The blood drives and PSAs featuring Van Helsing star Hugh Jackman will run throughout May.

Toys “R” Us in Times Square will run Van Helsing trailers on its outdoor scrolling billboard and on its 20-foot Geoffreytron LED screen. Also in Times Square, Madame Tussaud’s will feature a wax figure of Jackman as Van Helsing the week the film comes out, and Universal Studios Hollywood will open a Van Helsing Fortress Dracula maze on May 7 the day the movie is released.

Older movie properties also being promoted include classic monsters Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man, which also appear in the new Van Helsing film.

Licensees for the movie include Jakks Pacific Toys, which will manufacture a full line of action figures and play sets; Side Show, Inc. will manufacture collectors’ merchandise based on both the new and classic monsters; clothing licensee NTD apparel will feature Gothic fashions and men’s clothing lines in Kmart, Wal-Mart, Hot Topic and Target; Dark Horse Comics will have the rights to comic stories; HarperCollins will have the rights to a children’s novel; Pocket Books has the rights to an adult novel and Vivendi Interactive Games will release a game for PlayStation2, Xbox and Game Boy Advance.
