PayPal logoAt the end of 2012, PayPal expanded its offline payments service to 23 total brick-and-mortar retailers, nearly doubling its previous number of partners and exceeding its goal of 20 national retailers by the end of last year. PayPal’s in-store checkout system is now available in 18,000 physical stores throughout the U.S.

Among the 23 retailers using PayPal’s payments system are Jamba Juice, Advance Auto Parts, Dollar General, Home Depot, Nine West, Office Depot and Toys “R” Us. At Jamba Juice, PayPal is testing a new iPhone feature that allows customers to order and pre-pay for items at a local Jamba Juice before they head to the location to pick up their purchase.

Consumers who want to make in-store payments via PayPal can do so by using a payment card mailed from the company or their mobile phone.

PayPal is also partnering with point-of-sale company NCR. The agreement will implement PayPal’s payments system into NCR’s mobile apps and services for restaurants and other retailers. PayPal will initially be a checkout option within NCR’s Mobile Pay app. Eventually consumers will be able to utilize the PayPal app to find and check in at participating NCR Mobile Pay merchants. The two companies will also work to integrate PayPal mobile payment options into NCR’s Convenience-Go app for petroleum and convenience stores.

The in-store payments game is certainly heating up, with Groupon recently expanding its Groupon Payments offering to Android devices and Square’s big deal with Starbucks.
