According to a report issued late on Monday by ComScore Networks, Google enlarged its share of the U.S. search market for the eighth consecutive month in March. Of the top five search engines, Google and Ask (formerly AskJeeves) were the only two to notch an increase. Yahoo!, Microsoft’s MSN, and Time Warner’s AOL all posted declines.

For the month of March, Google’s share of the U.S. search market grew 6.3% to 42.7% of the 6.4 billion queries conducted online. Ask increased its share by 0.4% to 5.9% of the total market.

Meanwhile, Yahoo! lost 2.6% of its previous share and dropped to 28% of the searches conducted in March. MSN dipped 3.3% to 13.2% of the search market. AOL declined 1.4% to 7.6% of the U.S. search market in March.

In a year-to-year comparison, Internet users in the U.S. performed 15% more searches in March of 2006 than they did in March of 2005. In a month-to-month comparison, 10% more searches were conducted in March than in February of this year, which was the largest month-to-month gain in the past 12 months.

Apart from being the top two search engines in the U.S. in terms of market share, Google and Yahoo! also dominated the searches conducted through toolbars. The two companies accounted for 95.4% of all toolbar queries. Google has attained 48.9% of this market, while Yahoo! has garnered 46.5% of toolbar searches.
