BCS Championship Game To Be Screened in 3D

Adding a new option play for college bowl games, Fox Sports and Sony Electronics will simulcast the FedEx BCS game between the University of Florida and the University of Oklahoma in 3D.

Using Cinedigm’s CineLive satellite distribution network, the match-up to decide the official college football championship team on Jan. 8 in Miami will be screened for 1,200 invited guests at the Paris Hotel and Casino’s Theatre Des Arts in Las Vegas and to 80 digitally equipped movie theaters nationwide.

“3D technology holds unlimited potential for the future of both sports broadcasting and live events production,” said Jerry Steinberg, Fox Sports senior vice president of field operations and engineering, in a statement.

His statement suggested that the 3D simulcast of the BCS Championship would become part of the annual ritual of the contest. The theatrical simulcast naturally appeals to a younger demographic of sports fans that have already experienced 3D movies.

The theatrical locations carrying the event will effectively expand the audience for this highly anticipated BCS Championship match-up, which is likely to generate one of the largest TV audiences for any of this season’s bowl games.

The simulcast will also be a showcase for Sony Electronics’ 4K projection technology at the Paris Hotel screening. That technology uses 4,000 horizontal pixels to present screen images, four times the resolution of high-definition TV systems. 3ality Digital will shoot the game using Sony HD cameras.

The NBA recently unveiled plans for an HD 3D simulcast of its NBA All-Stars contests on the Saturday night preceding the All-Star game that also will be screened in theaters that are part of Cinedigm’s network.
