Houston Astros players are joining with Petco and Houston-based Saving Animals Across Borders to encourage fans to adopt pets from animal shelters.
The 2008 Astros Player and Pet Calendar is now available at most Petco stores in Texas, the Astros’ Minute Maid Park and online at Astros.com/PetCalendar or SavingAnimals.org for $15. The proceeds will support adoption of homeless animals at Saving Animals’ Pet Adoption Center in Houston.
Participating Astros players made personal appearances at the Pet Adoption Center on Sept. 29 to autograph calendars purchased to support the project. Each calendar includes a coupon for free Advantage flea control.
In its second year of production, the calendar carries photos of Astros players posing with their own pets or homeless dogs and cats from the Harris County animal shelter. Astros Brad Ausmus, Brandon Backe, Dave Borowski, Adam Everett, Jason Jennings, Jason Lane, Brad Lidge, Carlos Lee, Mark Loretta, Trever Miller, Roy Oswalt, Chad Qualls, Chris Sampson and Woody Williams all posed for the calendar.
“My wife Jill and I have three adopted pets, so promoting adoption of homeless animals from shelters and spaying or neutering are very important to us,” Borowski said in a statement.
Petco and the Petco Foundation funds Houston’s Saving Animals’ Pet Adoption Center. Saving Animals Across Borders is a local non-profit organization, which promoted homeless pet adoption.
