Yahoo, EBay and PayPal Debut Anti-Phishing Effort

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Yahoo, EBay and PayPal have joined forces to better protect consumers against fraudulent e-mails and phishing attacks.

Phishing occurs when a dishonest online marketer sends an e-mail that contains a link to a fraudulent Web site where the users are asked to provide personal account information. The e-mail and Web site typically are disguised to appear as if coming from a legitimate financial institution or online marketer (Direct Newsline, May 8, 2004).

Starting Thursday, EBay and PayPal customers worldwide that transact business through Yahoo Mail will begin using DomainKeys e-mail authentication technology. This systems will block phishing messages from firms purporting to be them.

This technology upgrade will be rolled out globally over the next several weeks to all users of Yahoo Mail.
