‘World of Warcraft’ Taps Loyalty Via Visa Card

Game developer Blizzard Entertainment forged a deal with First National Bank to launch a video game-branded credit card, in which users rack up rewards points for game play time.

The “World of Warcraft” Visa card is similar to other rewards-based credit cards. Players earn one point for every dollar charged on the card. Users with 1,500 points can redeem their rewards for a free month of play on the at the Warcraft community site.

In addition, users also receive a free month of “Warcraft” game play after their first purchase with the card. Consumers can choose from 13 different credit card designs.

“World of Warcraft” is an online role-playing game, which launched in November 2004. Some 8.5 million people subscribe to the gaming community, of which more than 2 million players are from North America.

“This was a good way to offer something especially meaningful to ‘World of Warcraft’ players or to their friends and family members,” Paul Sams, chief operating officer for Blizzard, said.

Blizzard Entertainment is promoting the card online at the “World of Warcraft” community site.
