The WNBA and its teams will launch a new fitness initiative today, WNBA Be Smart-Be Fit-Be Yourself, with events across the country, and will hold community fitness clinics and workshops throughout the season.
“In this effort, we recognize that our players are the ideal individuals to carry this message and encourage fans to make physical fitness a regular part of their lives,” Orender said in a statement. “And, the benefits go far beyond physical health to include self-esteem and an overall positive self image.”
As part of the program’s launch, WNBA teams will hold WNBA Be Smart-Be Fit-Be Yourself fitness clinics and workshops featuring top players, coaches and team and league executives beginning today and continuing throughout the season.

The league feels it is responsible for emphasizing the health and fitness for women and children, said WNBA President Donna Orender.
The initiative will officially kick off in Seattle, where elementary school students will join players from the Seattle Storm stars in various interactive clinics. WNBA teams in Charlotte, Houston, Indiana, Los Angeles and Phoenix will also hold events, and will officially proclaim the day WNBA Kids Health and Fitness Day.
It is the second time the league has reached out to the public with a series of fitness events. Last season, the WNBA held a similar campaign called “WNBA Mind. Body. Spirit.”
League sponsor Spalding donated WNBA basketballs to be used in all community events held tomorrow. The 2005 season begins on Saturday.
