Winn-Dixie Replaces Coupons With Rewards Program

Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. has begun its first customer-loyalty program at supermarkets in Florida and southeastern Georgia. The Customer Reward Card program started enrolling members last month.

The firm has eliminated coupons from its weekly freestanding inserts, which are distributed in area newspapers and mailed to customers, and replaced them with promotions for the new rewards program, said Joanne R. Gage, senior director of consumer marketing services.

Membership is free and entitles customers to year-round discounts on a variety of merchandise. One point is earned for every dollar spent during special promotions tied mostly to holidays. Initially, points can be redeemed for free turkeys, hams or gift certificates. Other rewards will be offered throughout the year.

When customers sign up at participating stores, Winn-Dixie collects name, address, telephone number and e-mail address (month and day of birth are optional). Customers who forget the card can use their telephone numbers as program identification. At sign-up they have the right to opt out of receiving mail and e-mail related to the program.
