Wal-Mart Preps for Winners’ Weddings

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Wal-Mart will host seven weddings in its Supercenter stores next month, on 07/07/07, to wrap up its Lucky in Love Wedding Search.

Wal-Mart invited couples to enter the contest online when they signed up for the retailer’s gift registry. A “Lucky in Love” link on the registry page Walmart.com/GiftRegistry sent couples to a page hosted by Wal-Mart’s private-label stationery brand G-Squared. There, the entrants submitted an essay telling their love story. The contest drew 400 entries during its March 20-May 6 window.

The seven winning couples will each be married in their local Wal-Mart store. The ceremonies will take place in the stores’ lawn and garden center, with an adjacent tent for the receptions. Each prize package, worth $5,000, includes 14-karat gold and diamond wedding bands, invitations, food and a wedding cake, bouquets, digital cameras and a digital photo frame, a portable GPS device and a $1,000 Wal-Mart gift card.

“Considering that Wal-Mart is like a second home to us, we’re excited to have our wedding there,” said bride Kymberlie DeRouen in a statement. She’ll marry Billy Guidry in Louisiana. The other weddings will take place in Bristol, VA; Kokomo, IN; Janesville, WI; Lebanon, OR; Charlotte, NC; and Gore, OK.

The contest was co-sponsored by Gartner Studios, which produces G-Squared stationery exclusively for Wal-Mart. The company also makes stationery and print-your-own products that are sold in mass-merchandise, party supply and office supply stores.
