USPS Eyes 2009 for Total Intelligent Mail Adoption

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

By 2009, the U.S. Postal Service expects to have in place one technology that can continuously track mail and give feedback to customers, USPS officials told its Board of Governors this week.

Dubbed Intelligent Mail, this system will rely on one standardized intelligent barcode used on each piece or container of mail. As they travel through the postal network, and are scanned at key points, the technology enables business customers to find out the progress of their mail at every step from arrival at a postal facility to processing to transportation to delivery.

Using this system, customers provide advance notification of each shipment electronically, enabling the USPS to better match appropriate resources. In addition, such tasks as verification – checking address quality, pre-sorting accuracy, and postage – are also automated.
