USA Networks, which owns the Home Shopping Network, is giving up its pursuit to buy search service Lycos Inc., according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
As had been widely discussed during USA’s three-month pursuit of the Internet service provider, CMGI Inc., a venture capital firm, opposed the deal, claiming it would shortchange shareholders. CMGI is Lycos’ largest shareholder.
