U.S. Adults Have Widespread Broadband Access

Posted on

According to recent numbers released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), 72% of adults in the U.S. have access to a broadband connection, and more than half of households in the U.S. have broadband subscriptions.

The research report, titled "Broadband in America: Access, Use and Outlook," indicated that 57.8 million U.S. households subscribe to broadband connections at home, which reflects a 21% jump over the past year.

CEA President and CEO, Gary Shapiro, said that this increase shows that future growth should be strong. "Yet, competition among broadband service providers must stay robust for this expected growth to prevail. Consumers must have access to media-rich entertainment content they can use anytime, anywhere at a reasonable price," he said.

Of all U.S. households with Internet access, 75% have broadband access. For 15% of households that do not have broadband subscriptions, price is the main reason why they have chosen not to switch over to a faster connection.

The study also highlights the growing fact that an increasing number of people are accessing the Internet from outside the home.
