Twitter Linked to the Most in E-Mail Marketing Campaigns

According to New York-based e-mail marketing analysis company Email Data Source, Twitter is the most linked-to site in e-mail marketing in 2009, followed closely by Facebook.

For the first three months of the year, Facebook led Twitter with 9,959 e-mail campaigns containing links to its site, compared to Twitter’s 7,522 links.

However, the tides turned in April, when Twitter had 6,726 links to Facebook’s 6,180. That has carried over into May and June.

For the first six months of the year, Twitter has been linked to in 41,399 e-mail campaigns, while Facebook has been linked to in 41,052 e-mail campaigns.

In June, Twitter had 9,506 links in e-mail campaigns, while Facebook had 8,636.

“The first email campaign with a link to twitter.com tracked by Email Data Source appeared in 2007,” said Kelly Higginbotham in a company blog post. “For all of 2007, there were a total of 215 email marketing campaigns linked to that site. In 2008, the number of email campaigns linked to Twitter grew by 1081% to 2,540 campaigns.

“In comparison, there were 729 campaigns that linked to Facebook in 2007 and 12,650 campaigns in 2008.” This reflected growth of 1,635 percent, according to a company statement.

Unsurprisingly, Twitter and Facebook have become “the two most prominent linked to sites in all of email marketing,” according to Email Data Source chairman and co-founder Bill McCloskey in a press release.

With the majority of Twitter links containing content available to the public without the need to sign in, and with Facebook’s log-in “wall” to view much of its pages, this trend will likely continue for the foreseeable future.
