Top Online Advertisers in October

Posted on

TNS Media Intelligence recently released its list of the top 50 Internet advertisers for the month of October 2007. In light of the recent housing market struggles, and the ailing economy as a whole, the list offers an interesting look at what was, and begs the question of how much the list will change in the coming months.

The top spender on Web advertising was LendingTree, which spent $29.5 million in October. Clearly, this number is set for a dip as the housing market limps along.

E-Trade Financial was second on the list, spending $14.2 million in October, while Dell: Inspiron Computer was third, spending $13.3 million that month.

AT&T Wireless ($12.9 million), University of Phoenix Online ($11.7 million), Fidelity Brokerage Services: Consumer Services ($11.5 million), Verizon Wireless ($8.4 million), Privacy Matters Services ($6.9 million), TD Ameritrade ($6.7 million), and Classmates Online ($6.4 million) rounded out the top 10 on the list of 50.

Countrywide Home Loans: Consumer Services was 27th on the list, spending $4.0 million, while the Wall Street Journal was 33rd on the list, spending $3.4 million. Rupert Murdoch, Chief Executive at News Corp., which owns the Wall Street Journal, recently squelched murmurs that the online version of the paper would be made available to the public for free.
“We’re sort of dividing it up. Those things that you can get more or less as a commodity on different sites about finance, that will certainly be free at the Wall Street Journal," he said. “The really specialized (material) giving the greatest insights, that will still be a subscription service."
Currently, WSJ.com charges $99 per year for a subscription to all of its online content.

In total, the top 50 Internet advertisers in October spent $267.8 million in October.

This list will likely see noticeable changes in the coming months, as financial firms will probably decrease their online ad spending.
