Thulin Changes Plea to Insanity in Attempted Murder Case

James Thulin, president of list management/brokerage company TCI Communications Inc, has changed his plea Friday in his attempted murder case to not guilty by reason of insanity, according to the Los Angeles Direct Attorney’s office.

His next court date comes Jan. 6 before Judge John Fisher in Superior Court in Van Nuys, CA who will rule on the insanity defense, said Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.

Attorneys for Thulin were not available at deadline.

Last April, Thulin pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, assault and other charges in Los Angeles Superior Court.

This case has lasted nearly a year and a half, so far.

According to a felony complaint requesting an arrest warrant, Thulin attempted to murder Andrew Solmessen on July 17, 2004. In addition, Thulin committed “assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury” and “aggravated mayhem” against Solmessen, the July 29 complaint alleged (Direct Newsline, Sep. 28, 2004).

The complaint also states that Thulin committed first-degree burglary by entering “an inhabited dwelling house and trailer coach…occupied by John Peter Cherpas with the intent to commit larceny.” It also charges that Thulin assaulted Leonardo Fernandez.

Finally, Thulin committed “battery upon doctor or nurse with injury” against Mark Baltau, whom he “reasonably should have known was a nurse and there engaged in rendering emergency medical care,” the complaint continues.
