The FTC Collects Info From Data Brokers to Study Privacy Practices: The Companies Respond

As a follow-up to its report on the data broker industry and the opening of a formal investigation into data brokers’ practices in October, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued orders asking nine data brokerage firms to provide the agency with information regarding how they collect and use data about consumers.

The nine companies are: Acxiom, CoreLogic, Datalogix, eBureau, ID Analytics, Intelius, PeekYou, Rapleaf and Recorded Future.

What are data brokers?
“Data brokers are companies that collect personal information about consumers from a variety of public and non-public sources and resell the information to other companies,” the FTC explains in its announcement of its orders for information from the nine data brokerage companies.
