Taco Bell Runs World Series Giveaway

If one player on either team steals a base in the World Series, it’s free crunchy beef tacos all around at Taco Bell.

“Steal A Base, Steal A Taco” is Taco Bell’s latest in a string of World Series giveaway plays. A stolen base by either team in the first two games of the series means free tacos for everyone in the country at Taco Bell restaurants on Oct. 30 between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. local time. A steal in games three through seven means free tacos on Nov. 6.

Taco Bell will also donate $20,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America if a base is stolen. St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer is Lou Brock, who holds the World Series record for stolen bases with 14, is Taco Bell’s spokesperson for the “Steal A Base” campaign.

“No matter which team you root for, everybody will be a winner during this World Series,” said David Ovens, Taco Bell chief marketing officer, in a statement.

The odds might improve if Lou Brock was in either lineup. But the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox each managed two stolen bases in their respective championship series. So the chances are good that this will be Taco Bell’s first World Series promotion play with a real payoff.

Taco Bell had offered free tacos based on the placement of home runs hit in the 2002, 2003 and 2004 World Series—including a floating 15-foot target in San Francisco’s McCovey Cove—however, those challenges were not met. And even with the target zone expanded to include any home run hit to the left of center field in last year’s third game of the series, no free tacos.

“We want to give away millions of tacos. We’re serious about it, said Taco Bell spokesman Rob Poetsch.

With only 90 feet between first base and second base, this year Taco Bell has made free tacos a virtual lock.
