Switzerland, US Lose Active Internet Home Users in December

Nielsen Online recently released its monthly report of worldwide active Internet home users in December and revealed that only Switzerland and the U.S. saw their Internet user count shrink.

Switzerland’s active Internet home user population shrank 1.49 percent in December from November, finishing the month with 3.74 million users. From October to November, Switzerland experienced a 1.87 percent boost in its Internet user base.

Meanwhile, the U.S. lost 1.48 percent of its Internet users in December, finishing the month with 153.3 million users, down from 155.6 million in November. In November, the U.S. experienced a month-to-month increase in its user base of 3.45 percent.

The U.K. saw the largest month-to-month increase as its Internet user population grew to 29.8 million users, a 4.93 percent boost from November’s 28.4 million users.

Italy experienced a 3.60 percent increase, finishing December with 17.6 million active users, up from 17.0 million in November, when it was the only country to see a decline.

Japan’s active Internet home user population grew 2.93 percent to 50.6 million in December.

Germany’s active Internet home user population grew 1.61 percent to 39.4 million in December, while Spain saw its Internet population grow 1.42 percent to 18.3 million. Spain saw the biggest growth in November, as its active Internet user population rose 6.37 percent month-to-month.

France experienced a 0.64 percent increase, finishing the month with 29.0 million users, Brazil saw a 0.52 percent increase to 24.5 million users and Australia saw its active Internet home user population grow 0.50 percent to 11.6 million.

In January, Nielsen Online showed that the average home Web user in the U.S. spent 40:25:10 online, spending an average of 54 seconds on each Web page viewed, and visited 68 domains.

Meanwhile, the average work Web user in the U.S. spent 89:12:58 online in January, spending an average of 60 seconds on each Web page visited, and visited 131 domains.
