Spain Sees Surge in Number of Internet Users

The latest figures released by Nielsen Online show that the number of Spain’s active Internet home users in November saw a month-to-month jump of 6.37 percent in November.

The country had 18.1 million users in November, a noticeable increase from its 17.0 million users in October.

The U.S. also saw strong growth of 3.45 percent, as it ended November with 155.6 million active users, more than 5 million more than its 150.4 million users in October.

Brazil’s active Internet user population increased 3.14 percent to 24.4 million users from 23.7 million users in the October.

France experienced a 2.83 percent boost, finishing November with 28.8 million active online home users, while Switzerland’s active Internet user count grew 1.87 percent to 3.8 million.

Australia saw a 1.52 percent increase to 11.5 million active users, Japan saw a 1.37 percent increase to 49.2 million users, while Germany and the U.K. experienced growth of less than 1 percent.

Of the 10 countries tracked monthly by Nielsen online, only Italy saw a drop in the number of its active Internet home users, finishing November with 17.0 million users, reflecting a 1.16 percent drop.

Figures released by eMarketer pegged the online population in the U.S. in 2008 at 192.8 million, or 63.4 percent of the entire population.

The company expects this figure to rise to 199.2 million or 64.8 percent in 2009, 205.3 million or 66.2 percent in 2010, 210.9 million or 67.3 percent in 2011, 216.0 million or 68.3 percent in 2012, and 221.1 million or 69.2 percent in 2013.

In terms of the gender split, eMarketer estimates that 51.8 percent of the U.S. Internet population was female in 2008, while 48.2 percent was male.

This split is expected to remain the same in 2009. eMarketer expects this split to lean more towards females as time passes, reaching 52.1 percent female in 2013, and 47.9 percent male.
