Southwest Names Winner in Consumer-Generated Ad Contest

After reviewing dozens of entries, Southwest Airlines has named a winner in its national consumer-generated ad contest.

Brian Cates of Oklahoma City, OK, won the grand prize in the airline’s Wanna Get Away? Campaign. Southwest will transform the winning ad into a 30-second spot, which will air during the NBA Playoffs in April.

Cates’ ad shows a shy man who wants to tell a co-worker he loves her. When he gathers the courage to profess his true feelings, the woman tells him she just got engaged. His video was chosen out of more than 140 submitted for the contest.

Consumers voted on the videos, but a panel of judges made the final decision based on the submissions’ creativity and use of humor.

Viewers can watch the winning ad, as well as runners-up videos, at SouthwestWannaGetAway.com. Southwest Airlines tied the campaign to its ongoing Wanna Get Away? ad campaign featuring people in embarrassing situations. (PROMO Xtra, Feb. 8, 2007)

GSD&M, Austin, TX, created the ad campaign.

Southwest promoted the contest on the company’s Web site and via online blogs.
