Social Media Demographics: Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and MySpace

Advertising Age recently unveiled some helpful and interesting social media demographics “based on actual user profiles, not just Web traffic.” They even made a nifty infographic including all the data.

According to the breakdown, 57 percent of Facebook’s users live in the top 10 countries on the social networking site. The breakdown, based on data from Facebook, is as follows:

  1. U.S.: 155 million
  2. Indonesia: 36.6 million
  3. U.K.: 29.8 million
  4. Turkey: 28.4 million
  5. India: 25.5 million
  6. Mexico: 24.0 million
  7. Philippines: 23.2 million
  8. France: 22.0 million
  9. Italy 19.2 million
  10. Germany: 18.4 million

Meanwhile, 82 percent of LinkedIn’s users live in the top 10 countries on that site. The breakdown, based on data from LinkedIn, is:

  1. U.S.: 46.7 million
  2. India: 9.6 million
  3. U.K.: 6.3 million
  4. Brazil: 4.1 million
  5. Canada: 3.9 million
  6. Netherlands: 2.7 million
  7. New Zealand: 2.5 million
  8. France: 2.5 million
  9. Australia: 2.1 million
  10. Italy: 1.8 million

Ad Age also used Facebook data to show what Facebook users are listing as interests/characteristics:

  • Have a birthday this week: 44.3 percent male, 55.7 percent female
  • Married less than a year: 38.8 percent male, 61.2 percent female
  • Are parents: 28.9 percent male, 71.1 percent female
  • Baseball: 55 percent male, 45 percent female
  • Football: 39.4 percent male, 60.6 percent female
  • Sports (married users): 36.3 percent male, 63.7 percent female
  • Sports (unmarried users): 46.8 percent male, 53.2 percent female
  • Cats: 13.5 percent male, 86.5 percent female
  • Beer/wine/spirits: 54.8 percent male, 45.2 percent female
  • Cooking: 30.7 percent male, 69.3 percent female

According to data from Pew Research, less than 10 percent of the population uses Twitter. Of this segment, 54.6 percent are female and 45.4 percent are male. This data also shows that 43.3 percent of Twitter users are between the ages of 30-49, while 41.5 percent are 18-29, 13.7 percent are 50-64 and 2.6 percent are 65+. Also, 63.7 percent of Twitter users are white, 19.2 percent are Hispanic and 17.1 percent are black.
