Shell Pumps up Gift Cards to Draw Consumers

Shell Oil Products U.S. is dangling gift cards as an incentive to get prospective customers to sign up for its new credit card.

Consumers can participate in the Take Your Pick incentive by applying for credit cards at Shellcreditcard.com. The promotion ends June 19.

Consumers who are approved for the Shell-branded card and make three purchases within 60 days will get to choose a $25 gift card from such retailers as Shell, Best Buy, Lowe’s, Amazon.com and iTunes.

“The gift card phenomenon in the U.S is just booming,” said Carolyn Yapp, manager, Shells card and payments programs in the U.S.

“We hear from more and more people that gift cards are a great way to reach consumers to give them the kind of rewards they want,” she said. “We hope to achieve a broader demographic through this program.”

To fuel the promotion, the company has added a sales incentive. Shell Oil will reward $100,000 in gift cards across 75 service stations whose employees sign up the most consumers during the promotion. The program is supported by P-O-P, print and radio.

Last year, the company ran a similar promotion, which garnered 35,000 new accounts during the promotional period.

“It’s a fantastic way for us to grow our business and for us to help [service stations] promote their business,” Yapp said.

Shell Oil Products U.S., a subsidiary of Shell Oil Co., has a network of approximately 6,600 branded gasoline stations in the Western U.S.
