Senate Judiciary Leader Backs Compiler Industry Hearings

Senator Arlen Specter, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has agreed to hold hearings on the compiled information industry. The Pennsylvania Republican did not indicate when such hearings might take place, nor whether they would be full or subcommittee hearings, according to Tracy Schmaler, a spokesperson for the Judiciary Committee’s Democrats.

Senator Specter announced his support of hearings in part due to a letter he received from Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) the ranking minority member of the Judiciary Committee. The two-page letter read, in part, “[I]nformation brokers have amassed billions of private and public records on individuals that include sensitive information such as financial, travel, medical and insurance data
