Seinfeld and Superman Join Forces for American Express

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

In an attempt to catch the attention of the Web-savvy consumer, Jerry Seinfeld and Superman are both featured in an American Express “Webisode” that chronicles their unique friendship while subtly enticing Web users to sign up for an American Express card.

The four-minute Webisode launched this week is entitled A Uniform Used to Mean Something. The Webisode, co-written by Seinfeld, is a humorous glimpse into a day-in-the-life of pop culture’s latest odd couple.

Visitors to www.americanexpress.com/jerry will enter “Jerry’s living room” in which they can view the Webisode, check out behind-the-scenes footage, get a glimpse of the upcoming May sequel Hindsight, and sign up for an American Express card membership.

The launch will be supported by a marketing and public relations campaign complete with three 15-second teasers featuring clips of the Webisode on both national and cable programming.

Both Seinfeld and Superman will be depicted on polybags wrapping New York metro area newspapers; LidRocks, specialized lids for fountain drinks served at movie theaters, will contain mini disks featuring campaign content, behind-the-scenes footage and clips; postcards featuring three different images from the Webisode will be distributed to hundreds of dining and entertainment merchants and health clubs in the greater New York area.

Seinfeld and Superman last appeared together in a 1998 TV spot for American Express.
